If you would like to nominate someone to receive a Quilt of Valor, visit the QOVF website at The quilts are presented to all military service members regardless of conflict, declared war or otherwise, in which they served. The group relies on private donations for the fabric and batting used in each quilt, and the members donate their time to make each one unique and personal. More than 275 local service members and veterans have been awarded Quilts of Valor by the Patriotic Piecers since the group was formed in the fall of 2013. The mission is being carried out locally by our Patriotic Piecers, a small group of about 20 volunteers who meet at the American Legion Post 143 in Post Falls the third Monday of each month. Their mission is to “cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” These quilts are tokens of appreciation that unequivocally say, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor.” The foundation has presented over 211,000 quilts to veterans and service members in all 50 states. She was inspired by her son's deployment to Iraq and her desire to see that returning troops were welcomed home with love and gratitude. The Quilts of Valor Foundation is an ongoing national service effort started by Catherine Roberts in 2003. Maryland Vacuum and Sewing Center believes in giving back to our military men and women who have served so bravely in the defense of our nation and way of life. Since that time, the membership has out grown our shop space, but we still try to support them in other ways. ![]() They shared a wealth of knowledge about the Quilts of Valor with us and have taken leadership of the group during the last three years. We are very fortunate to have Sylvia and Gerry Lague join our group as they have participated in two groups in different parts of the country. Of course, everyone was very excited about the forming of the group and there was much discussion about how we would get supplies for the quilts. During this meeting it was decided to call our group PAX Sound of Freedom. We had our first meeting on Octoand 10 people joined the group. One of the doctors mentioned to her that it would wonderful if more of their veterans could have a quilt, and so the Quilts of Valor foundation was started. The original group was started here in the Maryland/Delaware area by a woman who gave a quilt to the Walter Reed hospital. ![]() Quilts of Valor is a nationwide organization that volunteers to make quilts that are given to our country’s veterans of World War Two, the Korean War, and lately, the Vietnam War.
